The end of an era is near in Mexican football. Mazatlán FC will play their last home match in Liga MX against Deportivo Toluca, marking the final farewell of the club to their fans at Estadio El Encanto. In the 16th matchday of the Clausura 2026 tournament, the Sinaloan team arrives without options to qualify for the Liguilla. However, the match takes on a special significance as it will be the last occasion for the 'Cañoneros' to present themselves at home before the disappearance of the franchise. Despite the adverse sporting panorama, the team will try to close their passage through the top league with dignity, trying to stay with the three points against one of the strongest teams in the championship. On the other side, Toluca faces the match with very different objectives. The current champion of Mexican football is in fifth place in the general table and a victory could temporarily push them to third place. Nevertheless, the Red Devils will face this commitment with an important absence in the bench. Their coach, Antonio Mohamed, will not be present after being expelled following the incidents recorded in the match against América last weekend at Estadio Azteca. The confrontation between Mazatlán FC and Toluca is scheduled to take place this Wednesday, April 21, at 19:00 hours, central Mexico time. The transmission will be through Azteca 7 in open television, allowing fans to follow this match without cost. With the objective of saying goodbye to their fans with a full atmosphere, the club's board implemented an unusual strategy: free access to the stadium. All seats were released without cost, in addition to granting additional tickets to subscribers. For the general public, a limit of two tickets per person was established, subject to availability. A significant attendance is expected to accompany the team in their last home match in Liga MX. The disappearance of Mazatlán FC responds to a business decision. Ricardo Salinas, owner of the club and head of Grupo Salinas, opted to put the franchise up for sale after considering that the project did not consolidate either in sports or in commerce. The team, founded just six years ago, did not achieve the expected results on the field or the desired economic impact, leading to the decision to abandon the project. After the sale was finalized, Grupo Atlante became the new owner of the affiliation certificate. Although the economic details of the transaction have not been officially revealed, the agreement is already closed. As a result, Atlante will occupy the place of Mazatlán in Liga MX. The historic club will leave the Expansion League to join the top division again, something it had not been able to do due to the restrictions of the competition system in force in Mexican football.
